Abstract

In the past fifteen years dual language programs have proven successful in helping students develop English and, at the same time, maintain and develop their first language. This paper takes a critical look at dual language programs and their ability to address the challenges that English language learners face in the American educational system. The author will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of dual language education by focusing on the interaction of the participants, true equity in educational opportunities for both language groups and the view of these programs as an alternative to mainstream the classroom.
