Linguistic diversity and tolerance in Colombia

Abstract

This article deals with Colombia’s linguistic diversity, and it examines diverse types of discrimination, from the exclusion of some languages in the count of Colombian languages to the most subtle examples of discrimination through humor. It also discusses Colombian sign language and the different dialects, both social and geographic, spoken in the country. Finally it proposes some strategies that could reduce linguistic discrimination.
